Band Details

The Marvin James Band

Biography: In my younger years I developed an intense interest in a funny shaped object called a guitar. My Mom and Dad used to get a Montgomery Wards catalogue, and I'd lay on the floor and stare at the guitars for hours. Finally my Mother, as poor as we were, broke down and bought me a guitar called an Emaney. The first song I learned was Peter Gunn. I played that guitar for hours and hours. In later years, I met a guy named Samuel Montez, a very talented musician. We started a band call Sons of Freedom and played at all the jails in the state of Maryland. As my guitar playing got more intense, I discovered Jimi Hendrix. I studied his music for many years. Hendrix's music had sound of other worldly effects. In 1985, I put an R&B band together called The Seduction Band. I submitted a tape to WHUR in a nationwide talent search sponsored by Budweiser. We won the local competition. Three weeks later, we won the regionals and a trip to Chicago. We performed in Downtown Chicago at the Bismarck Pavillion. We were competing for a $50,000 recording contract with Polygram Records. We finished in second place out of 10,000 entries. Lou Rawls was shocked at my talent. Our original song was called, "Things are not the same." Because I love music so much, I going to continue to entertain and build my life around music.
